Our Speaker today

Today we got to listen to our very own James “Heff” Heffner tell us about one of his other passions, which is serving as the Grand Praetor of the Hudson Valley Region for the Sigma Chi Fraternity.  It is apparent that James is part of a very active Province, where there are currently 252 Active Brothers, and out of them225 are involved in Campus organizations.  127 are involved in athletics, and while the cumulative GPA of the brothers is 3.2`, the athletes are holding their own with a cumulative GPA of 2.91.  This is a very well-rounded group of young men.

Heff in is his role is very involved with legislative issues related to fraternities.  One of the key legislative initiatives is the end hazing in fraternities.  The END ALL Hazing Act and the Report and Education about Campus Hazing Act both have very strong bi-partisan support.  Sigma Chi takes it very seriously, and will shut down a chapter found guilty of hazing.

Another issue is where both fraternities and sororities are being pushed to not discriminate based on gender.  Basically, girls in sororities, boys in fraternities, girls scouts who are boys and boy scouts who are girls.  A group of students at Yale alleged that fraternities discriminate by only accepting males at fraternities.  That case was dismissed.  Currently Harvard has a policy where members of “unrecognized, same-sex” organizations could not hold positions in student organizations, captain athletic teams, and could not receive fellowships or scholarships.  Fraternities and sororities have filed lawsuits at both the state and federal level to reverse this decision.

Sigma Chi is a Top 5 fraternity, very philanthropic, and if it is putting out young men like Heff, we hope it has continued success.
