Announcements & Information

We cast our votes today for an eligible past RI Director to serve as a member of the nominating committee for President of Rotary International. The two candidates are Frank C. Collins, Jr. of East Hartford, Connecticut and Daniel W. Mooers of South Portland – Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Our good friend John Ford is in Waterbury Hospital and is able to receive visitors.

Monday May 26th is our Memorial Day Parade. All marchers are asked to meet at the Union City Post Office at 8:45 AM. Those wishing to help decorate the truck please meet at Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan parking lot at 8:00 AM There will be a truck available for participants that cannot march. Attire: Blue Rotary shirts and khaki pants.

Last week we collected $342.00 for the Haitian Health Foundation.

The Duck Race is Sunday, June 1st from 12:00 to 4:00. Anyone interested in volunteering please see Chuck.

Beer tasting: We sold 45 tickets that we know of. Rupi is still making a last minute accounting. This year’s annual meeting will be held at the Waterbury Club on Wednesday evening June 25th. Details to follow. Milt is looking for suggestions for entertainment.

On Wednesday June 4th at 6:30 pm, we will be hosting a Rotary orientation. This is a requirement for all new or recently inducted members. This event is open to all members. It is a good fellowship opportunity. This is also a great opportunity for anyone who has prospective candidates for membership to bring them and introduce them to Rotary. The orientation will be at Chuck and Carol Beebe’s home and will include wine, beer and refreshments. Sponsors are asked to attend and bring a bottle of wine. You may either see Chuck, Debbie Wheelahan or Geoff Drawbridge for questions and additional details.

Our Speaker Today

Mike Torres of the Laurel Bike Club

Our speaker host today was Joe DaSilva. In his absence, Chuck introduced Mike Torres, President of the Laurel Bike Club. He thanked us for our continued support of the Donovan Ruhlman Bike race and said that without our help, the race could not have continued. By providing marshals, banners, the flat bed truck and being a liaison with the Naugatuck Police Department and downtown business we are helping the sport of bike racing to continue. The race itself does not make money for the Laurel Bike Club, but it does provide a great venue for the racers, especially the junior racers. In the last two years the bike club has seen an influx of members. The club membership is around 50 members.

Bob Neth and Dave Down, from CT Signcraft, Rotary President Chuck Beebe and Mike Torres of the Laurel Bike Club

We took this opportunity to thank Connecticut Signcraft and Ram Welding for their continued support. Connecticut Signcraft donates the signage and banner every year and Ram Welding supplies the flat bed used for the race officials. Both received plaques recognizing our gratitude.

Mike is looking forward to the race that will be held on Sunday, July 20th
