Sergeant at Arms Duncan Stephens is back from his trip and had a story about his rental car experience. Prior to leaving, he thought he reserved a car on the rental car’s website. He filled out the application and couldn’t find the “submit” button on the screen. So, he printed out the application, thinking that would complete the process and was on his way to Spokane. Upon arriving at the rental car office, he quickly realized that there wasn’t any reservation in his name (even though he had a printed copy in his hand). They, of course, never received it. He and Eileen were given not given a sedan as originally planned, but a pick up truck. Duncan was the hero of the wedding! His pick up truck was used to carry everything to and from the wedding and reception. Everything happens for a reason!!!

Membership Anniversaries Geoff Drawbridge - 9/1/69 Mary Connolly - 9/1/95 Bruce Steinway - 9/13/06 Our Speaker Today Joe DaSilva was our speaker host and our speaker today. He owns and operates Restopedic Mattress Company. Joe originally worked for Sealy Mattress Co. in Oakville CT. He worked in all the departments, which served him well when he decided to open his own company, Olympic Bedding, in 1980 in Naugatuck. He moved the company to Bethany to a 40,000 sq. ft. building and renamed the company Restopedic. His tag line is “for the rest of your life”. He coined that phrase long before “Sleepys”. Joe makes mattresses for residential use (sold in stores in CT, MA, NY), institutional use (College Dorms, Nursing Homes and Hospitals). He also manufactures custom mattresses for Antique Dealers and architects.
In 2005 the federal government adopted the “open fire flammability law” which requires that all mattresses sold in the United States or imported into the United States must not ignite when subjected to an open flame. The testing laboratory requires that 2 mattresses be submitted for testing and they are subjected to an open fire for ½ hour and must not ignite. The manufacturer must list all the materials and methods of assembly to the testing facility. The only exception to this law is “one of a kind mattresses. These are mattresses that are prescribed by a physician due to an allergy or specially made without chemicals. In these cases the customer must sign a waiver to alleviate the manufacturer of all responsibility if the mattress should catch fire. To learn more about this law, go to www.safesleep.org.
