Our Speaker Today

Mike Elser, our speaker host today, introduced Dr. Jay Kenkare, Medical Director of the Waterbury Hospital Regional Sleep Lab.

Insomnia can cause poor health and is associated with aging more rapidly; more susceptibility to illness; an increase motor vehicle accidents; depression and anxiety; memory loss; decision making; obesity, heart disease and even death.

The US is the most sleep-deprived nation on earth. The cost of insomnia on the US economy is 13.9 billion dollars.

Some famous people with insomnia – Judy Garland (due amphetamine use), Theodore Roosevelt (used cognac in milk to fall asleep), Margaret Thatcher (only slept 4 hours a night), Vincent VanGogh (spread camphor {poison} on his pillow case to fall asleep).

Tips for a good night sleep are:

Use the bedroom only for sleep…no TV

If you can’t fall asleep in 15 –20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing.

Avoid activity that might stimulate your brain

Avoid heavy or spicy meals that might cause heartburn or discomfort

Try a relaxing ritual at bedtime – bath, reading a book

Avoid long naps especially 4-5 hours before bedtime.

Exercise, but not too close to bedtime

Cut down or eliminate cigarettes
