Our Speaker Today

Marcelo Martins, today’s speaker host, introduced Elizabeth Snyder and Lisa LaChance from Naugatuck High School. Elizabeth, the School Outreach/Crisis Counselor and Lisa, the School Social Worker, spoke to the members about the new mentoring program they are looking to implement at the school beginning in January of 2009.

They began by giving the Rotarians a self assessment quiz (yuck) in order to assess their interest/skills at becoming a mentor for high school students. Actually, it wasn’t that bad. They spoke to us about the changing demographics and the need for mentoring to those deemed “at risk”. In most cases, it would be a sympathetic, non judgmental ear for these students. The commitment on the part of the mentor is 1 hour a week for 10 months.

The application process includes, along with the application, completion of three references by a relative, friend, and co-worker. The next step would be an interview to better get to know the applicant with the goal of matching the mentor to a mentee. The next step would be a background check. Elizabeth and Lisa then would conduct the training session. The two speakers emphasized the fact that they would always be available to assist the mentor, should the need arise.

They are in the midst of identifying interested students, working closely with other teachers and interested parents.

If these is something you are interested in, please contact Elizabeth or Lisa.
