Our Speaker Today

Speaker host, Tracey Kelly introduced Bob Lyons and Paul Santos of Legends of Superheros, Middlebury Edge, 1655 Straits Turnpike, Middlebury, CT. Bob and Paul gave us some history of the comic book. In 1933, the first comic book was a giveaway, titled Bunnies on Parade. It was so popular, that the decision was made to try to sell these books and the “Famous Funnies, Series 1” was born. It sold for $0.10 and sold out almost immediately. Eastern Color Printing of Waterbury Ct, owned by William B. Pape printed many of the first comic books.

In the 1970, the industry changed drastically. Comic book sales took a nosedive. Venues that sold them were disappearing and replaced by big stores and the cost of producing comic books was out of control.

In 1973, an idea sprang up in Brooklyn to sell directly to stores and eliminate the distributors. This worked extremely well. The industry was able to expand into other merchandise, like posters, books, clocks etc.
