Our Speaker Today

Linda Cocchiola and Nichol Yanerella from Naugatuck Discovery

Naugatuck Discovery is a local collaborative made up of Naugatuck residents, child care providers, parents, seniors, family service providers, community groups, faith-based organizations and educators.

Naugatuck Discovery has been serving the community since 2002. The initiative was the result of a grant awarded by the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund in Hamden, CT. Through Discovery, more than 50 Connecticut communities and other partners statewide are working with the Graustein Memorial Fund to improve the lives of young children from birth through age 8. With focused attention on parent leadership and engagement and collaboration, Discovery communities and partners are pursuing four objectives:

  • Expand the supply of high quality early care and education
  • Improve the quality of existing early care and education
  • Strengthen connections between early care and elementary education
  • Improve student social, emotional and academic performance.

Naugatuck Discovery seeks to increase the community's understanding of the importance of early childhood for a child's social, emotional and academic development. Naugatuck Discovery also works to create and strengthen community partnerships and engage parent to achieve its goals of having all Naugatuck children excel in school and in life.

Naugatuck Discovery publishes newsletters for young families and for Naugatuck's early childcare and early learning community. The newsletter explores issues in childhood growth, development and learning with insights from local and area professionals and families.

Discovery works with other Naugatuck organizations to host events that support and encourage quality early childhood experiences within families and within the community. Naugatuck Discovery is a growing resource for education, information and support on early childhood for the entire Naugatuck Community
.

The William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund funds Naugatuck Discovery and has committed funding through 2009. The United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls serves as fiduciary. Naugatuck Discovery can be found in the office of The United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls at 284 Church Street (Naugatuck YMCA).

The Naugatuck Discovery Committee is made up of volunteers eager to make positive impacts on the early childhood experiences of Naugatuck's children. If you want to help shape opportunities to support children's growth, development, happiness and success, join us. Call (203) 729-1564 ext. 10 or send an email to Naugatuckdiscovery@yahoo.com
