Our Speaker Today

Bruce Steinway, speaker chair today, introduced Susan Agamy from ACT, Spooner House

The mission of ACT is to provide food, shelter and support services to people in need in the lower valley. All of their energies are devoted to helping their clients establish a self-sufficient living situation.

Susan explained that Spooner House is helping people rebuild their lives and they serve the most needy in the community.  Spooner House is located in Shelton, CT.  It was founded in 1979 by clergy and lay people. They have gone from a service that provided 1 hot meal a week to those in need to an emergency shelter to more than 250 individuals annually. They serve single male and female individuals and families with children. They contract with their clients. This includes responsibilities at the shelter, a 6:00 PM curfew, to remain clean and sober throughout their stay at the shelter and to stay for at least six months. The duration of stay helps those individuals and families retain the skills and tools they need to live on their own with the good practices learned at Spooner House.

Their new facility is a 14,000 sq.ft. 36-bed residential facility for the homeless with an expanded food bank to serve the growing number of people in need in the region. Spooner house houses 36 individuals at a time. They are located at 30 Todd Road, Shelton CT.
