Our Speaker Today

Manny Vieira, speaker host for today, introduced Bob Mezzo an attorney in town and also a mayoral candidate. Bob spoke on volunteerism. He said that the is no lack of volunteerism in the town of Naugatuck. With the vast amount of organizations and schools, the community is always willing with their time and dedication.

There are 3 basic types of volunteers:

-Self serving volunteers- those that network for business and the like.

-Relational volunteers - those that are recruited by family, business associates or organization members.

-Belief volunteers - those that truly believe in the cause.

Even with the economy in the state that is in, the volunteer rates have remained static.

Some reasons why people do not volunteer - Not enough time, have had bad experiences in the past with volunteering, not enough follow through from the organization or feeling that they are not making an impact.

How to remedy this?

Respect the volunteers' time and talent, especially younger volunteers. Reach out to them electronically (internet)

Maintain efficiency and make the most of the time that the volunteer is donating.

Give a sense of acceptance and belonging to the volunteer.

Find the talent in each and make the most of it.

Allow room for growth so the volunteer does not stagnate

and most of all - Have Fun!
