Our Speaker Today

Sheila Baummer, Recycling Coordinator for Naugatuck

Speaker Host, Anne Butler introduced Sheila Baummer, Recycling Coordinator for Naugatuck. Sheila has been the coordinator since 1991 and explained that many changes in recycling have occurred since that time. It is much more than the occasional; paper drive! Since green is the topic of the day, more and more people are recycling. The borough is trying to make things easier. In Naugatuck, it is not necessary to separate cans, bottles and newspapers. When recycling plastic (1 and 2) the rule of thumb is anything that has a neck (bottles) are accepted. Remember to remove the cap or lid.

Pizza boxes are not accepted due to the grease from the pizza, but most other corrugated boxes are OK

There will be Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, July 11 from 8:00am to 2:00pm at Kennedy High School, 422 Highland Ave, Waterbury. This is for residents of Beacon Falls, Bethlehem, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Oxford, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Watertown and Woodbury. For more information call Naugatuck Public Works 720-7071.

The newest items that are now accepted for recycling are cereal boxes, shoe boxes, junk mail, office paper, Aerosol cans and oversize Plastic Bottles.

Remember that when you buy items, make "green" choices in the packaging. Look for items that aren't over packaged and have containers that are recyclable.
