September 2, 2009

Meeting Today

Pledge: Marcelo Martins

God Bless America: Milton Grele

Invocation: John Roman

Four Way Test: Jane Lobdell

50/50 Winner: Rebecca Zandvliet

Sergeant at Arms Jeff Chipokas fined Marcelo Martins, Tracy Kelly, and Peggy Dufresne. Happy Dollars from Jane Walsh, Ann Butler, Duncan Stephens, Mike Elser and Kathy Mauritz. General fine: anyone who didn't read the Rotarian magazine and know the name of the actress and activist casting a clear-eyed look at the devastation of Darfur Sudan and the plight of the refugees. Answer - Mia Farrow and Peggy Dufresne knew the answer.

Announcements & Information

Jeff Chipokas and Marcelo Martins spoke about the upcoming golf outing in Wyantenuck Golf Club on September 16th. This is the 56th year. We are up to 21 golfers......always looking for more. Sign up forms were handed out. You can attend just the dinner at a cost of $45.00. Raffle prizes still needed.

Jane Lobdell announced that the Naugatuck Youth and Family Services were holding its Wine tasting/dinner event at Carmen Anthony's Fish House in Woodbury on September 20th. It will include a six course meal and six different wines. The cost of the event is $110.00 and the cause worthwhile.

Marcelo made an announcement regarding Every Rotarian, Every Year. Acknowledging that times are difficult now, Marcelo suggested that if $100 was too much, perhaps $50.00 or even $25.00. The causes are great, the results rewarding.

Food Bank
This being the first Wednesday of the month, a basket was distributed to members to collect monies for the Food Bank. Thank you to all. We did receive a thank you note from the food bank to thank us for our donations for May, June and July.

A messeage from Robert Runde from Stamford regarding GSE Bon Voyage Brunch

I'd like to invite you to the Sendoff Brunch
for our departing outbound GSE team heading for
Australia later this month.

As we did for our inbound teams last April (and will
again next April), we are having the Farewell Brunch
at the New Haven Country Club.

Date: Sunday, September 20th

Time: 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Place: NH Country Club
160 Hartford Turnpike
Hamden, CT. 06517
(203) 248-4488

Cost: $25 per person

The festivities will include watching the
Australia-bound team make the presentation that
they will be giving Down Under.

Team Leader Alan Hurst and his four team members
and their friends and family will attend this event. It
would be great if we can also have a healthy contingent
of Rotarians to wish them God's Speed.

Please try to attend. And mention this to your clubs,
especially to those folks who have been loyal supporters
of Group Study Exchange.

(And, if you know of any likely applicants for the outbound
team going to South Africa next spring, now is a good time
to urge them to apply. We are interviewing three Team
Leader candidates in mid-September, and would like to
interview Team Member candidates in mid- to late-October.)

--Bob

Our Speaker Today

Tracy Kelly, speaker host, introduced Andy Teshoney who works with her at Amity Mortgage. Andy also formed a company with another person called "Two Guys Who Make Scents". Yes, it is a candle making company but not just an ordinary candle company. Andy and his partner make soy based candles. It's a fairly new product in the candle world and becoming very popular because it is all natural. No smoke, no black mess, it is just like burning food (Rebecca stated that she could relate to this) because it is a food based product.

Andy went on to explain to us that a bulk of his business is derived from fund raising campaigns by organizations. He would work with us to raise money. Each candle costs $17.00 and the club will get $8.50 for each sold. Andy would put the Rotary Logo on the jar and even the order form will be customized for the club. Although he has roughly 100+ scents, he recommends that we stick with a choice of 10, simply for ease of selling. A 21 day delivery is guaranteed from the time the order and payment are received. Our logo can even appear on their website for up to one year after our sales campaign and we would receive monies for any additional orders through the website. The candles would be delivered to the buyers by the Rotarians.

The candle will burn if lit continuously for approximately 70 hours. If the candle is repeatedly blown out and relit, it could last up to 120 hours....without any residue. There are holiday special scents such as pine and gingerbread for Christmas. They don't add any scents that they don't feel have the "real" aroma smell.
